OverDrive FAQ: the 2.6 app, compatible devices, accounts and end of life

With the re-release of OverDrive 2.6, we at ANKI aim to provide the community with a return to what many refer to as the best experience on OverDrive. We have updated the app to work on the latest phones and keep those engines at redline!

More on this page:

Will this app be free?

OverDrive 2.6 is a paid app. You can see the current price on the app's page in the App Store or on Google Play.

Do I have to buy the app on every device?

We believe you should play together! With Family Library (Google Play) or Family Sharing (Apple Store) enabled, each family will only have to pay for the app once on each platform. That is, if you want to play on devices that connect to different App Stores (Google Play and Apple Store, for example), you will have to purchase the app once on each app store platform. Guest devices or devices that are outside of the Family Library / Family Sharing plans will also need to purchase the app. See "How do I set up Family Library for Google Play or Family Sharing for the Apple App Store?" for instructions on enabling these great sharing options!

How do I set up Family Library for Google Play or Family Sharing for the Apple App Store?

Check out the below links for instructions to set up Family Sharing on each app store:
Android - Click here to learn how to set up Family Library for Google Play
Apple iPhone / iOS - Click here to learn how to set up Family Sharing for App Store

Does OverDrive 2.6 support cars from the OverDrive: Fast & Furious Edition?

Yes! OverDrive 2.6 now supports "Mammoth" and "Dynamo" cars, which are cars renamed from the Fast & Furious edition due to licensing expirations.

Please Note: OverDrive 2.6 does not support the Power Zone from the Fast & Furious kit. The app will crash if the Power Zone is scanned; please ensure that you do not use the Power Zone track piece while using the OverDrive 2.6 app.

Where do I send bug reports?

Please send reports of bugs or issues to support@anki.bot. Thanks for being patient with us while we work out the kinks!

Is my device compatible with ANKI OVERDRIVE or ANKI OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition?

The original OVERDRIVE and OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition apps have reached end of life. See this article. To play today, you need the OverDrive 2.6 app. The requirements on this page are for OverDrive 2.6.

Please Note: If your device cannot find and download the OverDrive 2.6 app in the Apple App Store or Google Play store, then your device will not work with OVERDRIVE.

When selecting a mobile device to use with our products, please consider the following important guidelines:

  • Minimum requirements
  • Operating systems

Due to differences among devices, some devices that meet or exceed the minimum requirements may not work well with OVERDRIVE.

Minimum Requirements for OVERDRIVE

Software

  • iPhone: iOS 18.0 or later
  • iPad: iPadOS 18.0 or later
  • Android 11 or later

These requirements come from the OverDrive 2.6 pages on the App Store and Google Play. Check the store pages for the current requirements.

Notes

We have specifically disabled some devices because they have known issues with the OVERDRIVE apps or are not standard. For example, the OVERDRIVE apps do not support any Tablet or Device that uses an x86, x86-64, intel, AMD, or Atom based Processor.

The minimum requirements may change at any time and without any notice.

Do I need the Starter Kit?

Yes, the OVERDRIVE Starter Kit is required to play OVERDRIVE.

There are two reasons that the OVERDRIVE Starter Kit is required:

  1. Only the Starter Kit contains the Start piece
    • This segment is required to be part of every track you build.
    • Without it, well, there's no way to Start or Finish.
  2. GroundShock and Skull are only available as part of the Starter Kit
    • They cannot be purchased separately.
    • These two Supercars are required to complete the Tutorial portion of the OVERDRIVE app that teaches you how to play and use the cars.

Combining the two types of track ||

1) Can I use my DRIVE cars with the new OVERDRIVE modular tracks and app?

Yes, if you use the OVERDRIVE app to control the cars.

Important:

  • DRIVE cars can only join Open Play mode (the Tournament is for OVERDRIVE cars)
  • Before seeing your DRIVE cars in the OVERDRIVE app garage you need to play a match

Screenshot_2018-07-20-09-44-06.png

2) Can I use my OVERDRIVE cars on the DRIVE track mats?

You can race your OVERDRIVE cars on the DRIVE race mats, but you must use the OVERDRIVE app to set up and control the game. It is not possible with the DRIVE app.

3) Can I use the OVERDRIVE track when hosting a game with my DRIVE app?

While it may initially appear to be working, OVERDRIVE tracks cannot be used with the DRIVE app. The cars will be uncontrollable and will continue to drive on the track endlessly with their lights flashing. In addition, the app will tell the user to “place cars on track” when they are already on the track. Please download the OVERDRIVE app to race your DRIVE cars on the OVERDRIVE tracks.

4) Can I combine my DRIVE track mat with my OVERDRIVE modular track?

Unfortunately it is not possible to create a circuit that uses both track systems. You have to choose one for your games.

Please note that Customer Care will be unable to support any queries about DRIVE. For further information, please see this FAQ.

Recommended age

We recommend OVERDRIVE for ages 8 and up.

However, parents can have just as much fun, if not more than their kids.

Privacy basics

This article covers some basic questions about how and why the ANKI OVERDRIVE and ANKI OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition app use certain user data. For further information about this topic please consult our privacy policy.

1) How do ANKI OVERDRIVE supercars work?

Supercars use sensors and an infrared camera to sense their position on the track, maneuver precisely and fire weapons in the different game modes. Their smarts are in the ANKI OVERDRIVE app which you download to your compatible phone or tablet, to then connect to and control your cars.

2) Why do I need a player account?

The ANKI OVERDRIVE and ANKI OVERDRIVE Fast & Furious app each ask you to create a player account. An account allows you to log in from different devices and maintain your game progress even if you delete the app or get a new mobile device. You can delete your account anytime. Please find more information in this article.

3) Android - Why do the ANKI OVERDRIVE / FAST & FURIOUS apps request certain permissions from my Android device’s operating system?

Android Device Location: Android requires this permission from apps like ours that access WiFi information, because that WiFi information could expose identifiers that could be used for location identification purpose. ANKI does not access, collect or store any data associated with this permission request.

Storage and Media Files: The app is split into a small APK (app) and a large data file (OBB) containing game data / assets. When the app is first launched after a new update, the large data file is downloaded to this external storage media and kept there. The "external storage media" on most modern Android phones is actually just internal flash storage.

Android Phone Status / Device ID and call information: The app uses this permission to generate a unique anonymous device identifier.
