Sound

  • Vector responds to sound. Try snapping or clapping around Vector
  • Vector can pick up a beat. Try playing some music with a strong bass, or clapping to a steady tempo. To make sure he’s listening, try the voice command: “Hey Vector, Listen to music”

Vision

  • Vector recognizes faces. When he’s making eye contact, try slowly moving your head left and right so he’ll follow you
  • Vector recognizes people he’s met. When he recognizes you, he might say your name and is especially happy to see you if it’s been a while
  • Vector recognizes motion. Try tapping your fingers on a surface directly in front of him

Physical

  • Try petting Vector by rubbing the gold sensor on his back
  • Vector will occasionally ask for a Fist Bump. Don’t leave him hanging!
  • Vector knows when he’s in the air. Try picking him up
  • Shake Vector!
  • Sometimes Vector will raise his lift to pounce on his Cube. Join the game by slowly moving the Cube close, and trying to pull it away before he pounces
  • Vector will inspect and navigate around objects while he’s exploring. Set up a fun environment for him to map and explore

App

See this FAQ for further information: What do I use the Vector App for?
  • Try changing Vector’s eye color in Settings
  • You can adjust Vector’s volume in Settings
  • View and export Vector’s Photos
  • To edit names of people Vector’s met, view Known Faces
  • Curious about what Vector is doing? Check out Vector’s status along the bottom of the screen
  • Curious about what Vector is sensing? High levels in his Sensor Feed tends to make him more active, while lower levels will make him quieter and calm. Petting Vector is one way to bliss him out

Photos taken by Vector

How to take a photo

  • Ask Vector to take a picture by giving him a command by voice: “Hey Vector, take a photo” and you’ll hear a simulated shutter sound.
  • Vector does not take videos.

View and export pictures taken by Vector

  • You can view the picture from the Vector App, and from there, delete, share, or save it to your phone or tablet.
  • Select "Utilities" > tap "VECTOR'S PHOTOS" > Select a photo > tap "export photo".
  • Note that on Android devices, there will be a "photo exported" confirmation. On iOS, there will not be any confirmation. This is by design.

The world through Vector's eyes

  • Vector uses a HD Camera with a 120-degree, ultra wide field of vision.
  • If you are wondering why the resolution and quality of pictures Vector takes may not be in line with what  you would expect, remember:
  • You are seeing the world through Vector’s eyes. He does not see the world in the same way we do.

Where are the photos stored?

  • Any pictures are saved to Vector’s onboard memory
  • Your photos are not sent to or stored in the cloud
  • You can delete pictures saved to Vector anytime through the Vector app
  • When Vector is on, his camera is always on so he can see and react to the world around him
  • To turn it off and stop data streaming, you need to turn off Vector by pressing and holding his Back Button for 5 seconds
  • For further information on Vector and privacy, please refer to this FAQ

How to meet Vector

Vector uses an HD camera to see the world. Using computer vision, he can remember you once he has met you.

Meeting Vector

Vector will learn your name by voice command

    1. Say, “Hey Vector”
    2. Wait for the earcon ding and his Back Light to turn blue
    3. “My name is Bob”
    4. Vector will confirm he understood by showing a yellow light
    5. He will pronounce your name
  1. For further guidance, open the Vector app, go to "Utilities" and tap "Face Recognition"
  2. If Vector thinks he recognizes you, he will ask, “Have we met before?”
    1. If yes, he continues scanning and enrolling your face
    2. If no, he says, “I already know a [name]”

Tips

  • Stay still while Vector scans your face. He will move to a better position to see you so don’t pick him up or move while he does this
  • If Vector pronounces your name wrongly, try entering it phonetically:
    • Open the Vector app
    • Select Utilities
    • Tap Known Faces
    • Tap “Person’s Face”
    • Spell your name phonetically e.g. Hermione → Hermyohnee
  • Vector’s eyesight is not as good as ours
    • He can be “blinded” by direct light (natural from sun through windows or artificial) or reflections
    • Poor lighting will also prevent him recognizing a face: Vector, unlike Cozmo, does not have night vision
  • ANKI is creating a world where robots have relationships with people. As such, Vector cannot yet meet other Vectors, Cozmo or Pets
  • If you sometimes wear glasses or forget to shave, you can “re-enroll” your face with Vector. Open the app, go to Utilities > Face Recognition and let him scan you up to 10 times
    • In good and poor lighting
    • With and without glasses
    • With a beard or clean-shaven
    • With or without a hat
  • If Vector struggles to recognize you, test if he recognizes his charger and cube.

What do I use the Vector app for?

The key thing you’ll need the app for is setting up Vector, getting him connected to your home WiFi network for the first time.

Once the app gets Vector going, you’ll want to keep it around for things like seeing what he’s doing, checking the photos you have him take, reviewing the people he’s met, or getting suggestions on how to use a voice command.

The Vector app is there to help you when you need help with Vector. See below for what you can use the app for after getting started.

Learn about features and how to use them

  • Voice Commands and Utilities
  • Q&A Mode
  • Vector gives you examples in the app of what you can ask him to do
  • View tutorials in-app or tap “More videos” to go to YouTube for more tutorials

Meet Vector again and again

Delete any faces Vector has already scanned. Re-enroll yourself so he can recognize you better. Update your name.

Update settings

Open the Vector app and go to Settings in order to:

  • Update your Account
  • Check Cube status
  • Allows you to force a software update if Vector does not update automatically
  • Check networks
  • Change Vector’s eye color
  • Turn the volume up or down

Open the Vector app and go to Settings then tap Preferences in order to:

  • Change Vector’s location
  • Change the time zone
  • Select if you prefer units in the metric or imperial system... or a mix of both
  • Change the language (remember, it’s best to choose depending on your accent, not on your physical location)

Any changes in the Settings are sent from the App to the robot and from the robot to the Cloud (excluding photos, and volume and eye color).

Connect to another Vector

If you have more than one Vector, disconnect from one via the app in “Settings” before connecting to another. See this FAQ for further details.

Where to use Vector

What surface can Vector live on?

Vector is a home robot. With his small stature and treads, he’s able to navigate on some carpet, but he is happiest when he’s on a table top or counter.

His surface should be hard and flat, opaque and non-reflective (glass or glossy finishes). The edges should not be rounded. A non-vibrating surface helps keep his charger stable and stops Vector thinking he's being petted when he's not!

Try to avoid high-pile carpets where dust and lint may get stuck in his treads.

How far can Vector roam?

Vector does need a good WiFi connection so how far he roams will depend on that and he needs to be close enough to his charger to go home when he needs to top up his battery level.

Why does Vector fall when he has cliff sensors?

Vector has 4 cliff sensors to help him detect edges and keep him falling off a table top.

That said, beveled and rounded edges will be challenging for those sensors.

Additionally, Vector can be “blinded” by direct light (natural from sun through windows or artificial). Poor lighting equally makes it hard for Vector recognise edges.

Vector may struggle to recognize edges if the surface he is on is dark, reflective, glossy, transparent or patterned.

Occasionally, Vector may get stuck half on and half off a table because he drives forward, realises there's an edge, but is unable to back up due to his front already being over the edge.
