OVERDRIVE vehicles: connecting, scanning, Multiplayer and lights

This FAQ provides some troubleshooting for when you are unable to detect a vehicle, connect to it or stay connected to it.

Basics

Please verify the following which influence successful connectivity:

  • Check you are using a compatible device
  • Check the OVERDRIVE app or the OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition app is updated to the latest version
  • Move away from any potential sources of interference including:
    • microwave ovens
    • Direct Satellite Service (DSS)
    • external power sources (chargers or power inverters)
    • wireless devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radio frequencies
    • wireless RF video
    • wireless speakers
    • some external monitors and LCD displays
  • Charge your vehicles fully. Vehicles will not connect or may disconnect if they have low battery
  • Check you are in the correct tab in-app for selecting a Supercar or Supertruck
    • hint: If you are using X52 ICE, you need to play a game before he is visible in the Garage

Troubleshooting

Other tips

  • If you are playing against Commanders / other players, have the Commander / other player select their vehicle first

Enabling location services on Android

Android 6 and higher is compatible with OVERDRIVE. However, due to changes in permissions with Android 6, the app may not be able to detect the vehicles properly.

To resolve this issue, enable location services. Your OVERDRIVE vehicles will now be detected properly in the app.

Why is scanning not successful?

This FAQ lists several potential issues you may see when scanning a track and how to overcome those issues.

Issues you may be experiencing

  • Vehicles do not start scanning
  • Vehicles do not line up properly
  • Vehicles do not stop scanning
  • Incorrect track configuration displayed in host app
  • Vehicle(s) do not appear in the host’s app

Normal behavior

  • Larger vehicles (BigBang, Supertrucks) struggle to complete scan, especially if the track includes a Launch Kit, Bank Turn Kit or Elevation Kit. The vehicle may stall, drive off track or do a wheelie

Troubleshooting the basics

  • check you are using a compatible device
  • check you have built a valid track configuration. While troubleshooting, use a simple oval track - "Microloop" - with 1 start/finish track piece, 1 straight track piece and 4 curved track pieces
  • Check the rear tires are not misaligned - the rim of the wheels should not be visible

Further troubleshooting

  • move the vehicles slightly forward or backward to line them up before you begin the game. This will not alter the results or the start of the game in any way
  • check you see all connected vehicles in the host app after scanning begins

  • try placing the vehicles on the track the wrong way around. Once scanning starts, they should correct their direction after approximately 1 lap
  • log into a different profile

Multiplayer: requirements and troubleshooting

This FAQ lays out some requirements for playing OVERDRIVE Multiplayer games. It also lists some issues you may see when playing this Game Mode along with some troubleshooting to do.

Requirements for playing Multiplayer games

  • Each player should use a compatible device
    • The most recently released / powerful device should be the HOST
    • Players using a device not on our compatible list and/or have downloaded the app manually via our APK will have a better gaming experience when JOINING a Multiplayer game rather than HOSTING one
  • Each player should be using the latest version of the app
  • All players should be connected to the same WiFi network
  • Your WiFi router should send the signal at either 2.4GHz or 5.0GHz
    • If your router frequency is over these two frequencies, consider temporarily disabling the network that is not being used by Joining devices

Errors you may see

  • “Waiting for players” message
  • Host unable to select players
  • Players unable to join a game
  • No nearby players
  • App crashes, freezes, hangs

Basic troubleshooting

  • Before setting up a game, all vehicles should be fully charged (LED on roof should be a steady green and pulse green when removed from charging platform). Low vehicle battery can prevent setting up a Multiplayer game as well as cause in-game disconnects
  • Host should activate their device's WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Joining “client” players should activate WiFi only on their device (this saves using BLE connections to connect to vehicles)
  • Joining “client” players may enable their device's Bluetooth if running into issues
  • Use of a repeater or range extender may interfere with connection
  • Other nearby devices using Bluetooth may interfere with connection
  • Toggle airplane mode on and off again on your device
  • Restart your device and re-launch the Overdrive app
  • Powercycle your router
  • If your router has an “Air Time Fairness” setting, disable it

Android-specific troubleshooting

  • If you are unable to join the same network, please create a hotspot on your Android device for others to join. If the hotspot created does not have internet connection, please do not forget to synchronize your profiles using an internet connection after playing
  • Low resources can cause slow performance among other performance issues. Close all unnecessary processes and apps running in the background and check you have at least 1GB RAM available
  • Disable Screen Overlays on devices using Android 6 or higher
  • Activate location services on devices using Android 6 or higher
  • If a 4-person Multiplayer game causes performance issues, try a 3-person (+ 1 Commander) game

What do the lights mean?

The app skins the gamepad to match your chosen vehicle. Top lights communicate a lot of critical information.

Just before the start of an event, the vehicles go on their parade lap, and while scanning the track, each vehicle's Top Light will respectively appear Blue, Red, Green, or Purple depending on the number of vehicles about to participate. The vehicles will then line-up for their standing start with these same Top Lights colors.

Top Lights flash Yellow matching the countdown

Top Light reflects Vehicle Energy levels

Once the event is going, all of the vehicle's Top Lights are Green, reflecting their Vehicle Energy level.

As your vehicle receives damage, and you use Weapons and Special Items, energy will drain from your vehicle. The less vehicle energy you have, the more vulnerable you are to being disabled.

Below are the energy levels associated with each Top Light's colors:

Healthy Green = 100% - 67%
Caution Yellow = 66% - 34%
Danger Red = 33% - Empty

When you know your energy level, you can adjust your strategy.

Top Light flashes when a vehicle is receiving damage

When an opponent is attacking and damaging a vehicle, that vehicle's Top Light will flash in the pattern of that opponent's particular weapon. You now can clearly see when you're being attacked and what kind of weapon is involved.

Top Light shows the impact of Gravity Traps

When an opponent is springing a Gravity Trap on a vehicle, the level of impact is reflected in the Top Light moving from Green, to Yellow, to Red, and then disabling that vehicle. This helps you to know when you should be evading or taking action.

A steady Blue Top Light means the car is invulnerable

You'll notice this at the start of an every event and when a vehicle has recovered from being disabled. When that light is Blue, it does not make much sense to attack a vehicle because you can't do any damage.
