Cozmo SDK, Code Lab and Education (EDU) Mode

In line with ANKI's passion to offer easy access to our technology and advance the state of robotics we have released a free Software Developer Kit ("SDK") for owners who want to tap into the power of their Cozmo!

With our SDK, you can program Cozmo to do something with a single line of code that once would have required a PhD-level expert in robotics and AI to achieve.

This means, with the SDK, you’ll be able to use Cozmo’s facial recognition to identify faces and take actions, or his computer vision and path planning to navigate around obstacles in his environment, or tap into his animation system to choreograph complex movements upon command. And that’s just the beginning.

Please note that the Cozmo SDK is only available in English.

For a more approachable programming experience that is also localized, please take a look at Cozmo's Code Lab.

Cozmo's Code Lab

In Cozmo's Code Lab, you can program Cozmo to perform any action you want, using all of his sensors, motors, and speech abilities.

Specific questions about Cozmo's Code Lab?

For any questions about how to use Code Lab, please email us at support@anki.bot.

Code Lab is based on Scratch Blocks

Cozmo’s Code Lab is based on Scratch Blocks, a collaboration between Google and the MIT Scratch Team.

Requirements

  • iOS 12.0 or above
  • Android 7.0 or above
  • Fire OS 5 or above

Some Additional Notes

Sandbox Mode

After updating to Cozmo 2.1.0, Code Lab projects that you previously created are now Sandbox projects.

You can continue to use your Sandbox projects, create new ones from scratch, or rename Sample Projects as Remixes to jump start your projects.

As of Cozmo 2.2.0, you can now make copies of Sandbox Projects just like Constructor Projects.

Constructor Mode

Constructor Mode is an all new way to take your coding skills to the next level.

Just like Sandbox Mode, Constructor Mode comes with some amazing Sample Projects from which you can create Remixes to jump start your projects. Constructor Mode adds the ability to save your projects to Google Drive.

To start using Google Drive with your Constructor projects, download the Google Drive app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store.

For Kindles (which do not support Google Drive), you can use email to backup your Constructor projects.

Google Drive and email are each great ways to make copies of your Constructor projects just in case you have to reinstall the Cozmo app or if you want to move them to another device. Making copies just in case or to save your progress with a particular Constructor project is always a good idea.

For a more advanced programming experience with Cozmo, please take a look at the Cozmo SDK.

Learn below what Education Mode is, how it differs to the regular version of the Cozmo app, and who to contact if you have issues when using Education Mode.

What is Education Mode?

  • App version 3.4.0 introduces EDU Mode
  • EDU Mode focuses on learning with Cozmo and Code Lab
  • There are some differences in how the app works depending on if EDU Mode is enabled or disabled

How do I enable EDU Mode?

  • Once you have set up Cozmo as normal and synced to his 3 cubes, go to Settings > Enable EDU Mode. Once enabled, this will be your default Mode unless you disable EDU Mode
  • Please note that if you wish to turn off automatic Cozmo updates, you need to do this via your device settings

What is different?

  • Code Lab is the default Main Menu
  • Pause Cozmo's Needs
  • What is stored in Cozmo
    • EDU Mode is not stored in a specific robot
    • Progress from a specific robot is not saved when EDU Mode is enabled
  • "What's new" dialog boxes are not displayed
  • When placed on his Charging Platform, and plugged in, Cozmo does not go to sleep when in Settings or Code Lab
  • When in Settings or Code Lab, Cozmo does not enter "Freeplay"
  • Multiple Cozmos and Cubes in the same environment?
    • Pair Cozmo to specific cubes
    • Allow Cozmo to sync to three cubes before enabling EDU Mode
    • Allow Cozmo to always sync to these same three cubes by using the checkboxes in "Cube Status" to prevent Cozmo from discovering and connecting to different cubes (even when selecting "Auto Connect")
